An Amusing Case of Gender Confusion?

These days it's hard to find cute, quirky TV shows that the mainstream hasn't heard of. Many of you may flinch when I suggest that you watch an anime, but hear me out before passing judgement...

Ouran High School Host Club does not have a complicated, abstract plot. It's not based in a fantasy world. It's based on a Japanese school: a school that makes the glamorous American schools look fatally poor. For all the wealth, it's full of quirky characters that are all completely oblivious in one way or another.
The artwork is beautifully done, the school and landscapes are all rendered with detail, leaving the characters rather simple in contrast. There's some slapstick to the comedy, and it's very light hearted despite touching on some rather strange topics.

Despite being anime, there's not too much Japanese slang to confuse you if you're not familiar. It's rather westernised, so there isn't too much of a Japanese feel. In saying all of that though, the names of people and places are kept true to form, so there isn't a sense of displacement. It's been dubbed in english, so you don't have to read a whole heap of subtitles.

If you've ever dreamed of being so rich you don't know what to do with your time and money, if you're a fag hag, or you just love a hint of boy on boy action, this will tickle your fancy and give you quite a few good laughs.

Only those with excellent social standing and those from filthy rich families are lucky enough to spend their time here at the elite private school Ouran Academy. The Ouran Host Club is where the schools handsomest boys with too much time on their hands entertain young ladies who also have way too much time on their hands. Just think of it as Ouran Academy's playground for the super rich and beautiful...

Here's the first episode, enjoy! (much thanks to whomever posted it)
