amie&mollie. Vintage label.

I recently got the chance to interview good friends amie&mollie, talking about thier newly established vintage label.

We go by many names. Some call us Masterchef enthusiasts. Others call us concrete inscriptors. Some call us tea fanciers. Others call us Wolverine. But underneath our shiny exterior we are really just a young fashion duo from the streets of Highgate Hill. When we’re not studying, visiting Narnia, or stroking furry animals; we like to get together and collect, restore, alter and create our own clothing. Whether it be an amazing op-shop find, something that’s been loitering in the back of our closets for years, or a piece of material fashioned into one of our own creations... we’re the girls who know how to put together one hell of a vintage outfit!

L: What does fashion mean to you?

A&M: a fun and artistic way to express one's personality. For us, vintage clothing is a celebration of eras passed ^__^

L: How would you define fashion?
With a dictionary.

L: When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?
A&M: It's sort of an inherited trait. We are from families which embrace second hand shopping and the use of hand-me-downs. Growing up and gaining a sense of our individual styles, we have adapted to personalizing these pieces and finding some op-shop wonders of our own. Clothing is more than a lifestyle. It's a sitcom.

L: What was the first article of clothing you ever designed?
Mollie: I made matching outfits for my doll and I when I was little. They were blue with ladybugs.
Amie: My mother and I made the dress I wore to my 12th birthday. It was lavender and had gingerbread ladies in swing-dancing skirts on the hem. The blouse part had a white Jacobean ruff and the cuffs were white lace.

L: How long does it usually take you to construct a piece?
A&M: Usually a day or two (granted we do have day jobs and study). Though we have been known to whip something up in the spur of the moment when trying to find something new and exciting to wear out!

L: What type of models do you like to work with?
A&M: skinny ones. ONLY KIDDING (laughs) Everyday beautiful girls. Girls we can laugh with and hang out with after the shoot. Girls who like glasses and listen to good music.

L: Describe the general process you go through to design and realize a piece of clothing.
A&M: It's different every time. We can be watching an old movie (our favourite style gurus are "Stiles" from Teen Wolf, Audrey, and Molly Ringwald), walking down the street or op-shopping when we stumble across an idea. Often it’s replicating old fashions in modern colours and cute patterns.

L: Who are some of your favourite designers?
A&M: Alannah hill, Chanel, Jimmy Choo (for adorable shoes!) and we love finding vintage finds on etsy or modcloth.com OHH, AND PRADA! You have to have Prada

L: Where do you buy your fabrics and other sewing materials?
A&M: op-shops/vintage stores, Diagon Alley, markets, Cooroy Drapery (Sunshine Coast) and Trads (Cannon Hill).

L: What do you believe makes a quality article of clothing?
A&M: Trust... and a little bit of pixie dust!

L: Do you consider yourself an artist?
A&M: It's not like we're the next Vincent Van Gogh...or are we?

L: What matters to you most as a fashion designer?
A&M: As wizardry craftsman, Mr Ollivander, states in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: "the wand chooses the wizard, Harry". It's always very rewarding when a piece truly reflects the wearer's personality.

L: What's your favourite part about conceptualizing a design?
A&M: Seeing our deeply laid plans come to fruition.

L: Advice for anyone wanting to start their own label, or people who are unsure if they have the talent for fashion design?
A&M: Treat your talent like a new flagpole. Why don't you show old glory a little respect and snap off a salute? And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.

L: Thank guys! =)
A&M: <3<3

Check out some more of thier creations :) And remember if you have any questions for Amie or Mollie or are interested in any of thier designs, you can send an email through to circa1943@gmail.com
